OUGD 505 - Evaluation

Evaluation
throughout this module there has been 2 briefs, in which one i had to design my own money and on another i had to chose a global problem to campaign about.
i had to research and present a campaign within a political/economical problem.
I have decided for the money brief to research into the currency of euros, considering i am spanish so it is my currency.
I decided to portray a more historical message within my currency, using a geometrical tiles to represent granada and moorish empire.
The stock used was a professional paper by G.F.Smith paper obtained when they came to my university.
all  three coloured stock could have been used to relate to the moorish empire given that these colours are used in the architecture left behind by the moorish empire.
My design was complicated, i had 4 screen print coloured layers(red, yellow, blue and silver) and one coloured stock, making my design hard to produce.
My final production was the blue stock with silver screen print of a construction of the 4 original screen print colours.
The final type face is screen printed in white with the name 'Al-andalus' and a small bit information to the cultural aspect being portrayed in the money.
For my book publication i was initially going to do a set of posters, but because i had too much information and wanted to explore a wider range of techniques i decided to make it into a book.
My first approach was targeted at children but then i changed my target audience to families.
The typeface was changed a few times throughout the production due to being too chunky and inappropriate to the audiences or too unclear to read.
The final typeface used was appropriate to my target audience, I would have like my book to have more pages, more context, i would have liked a page with stickers for the children, a small envelope with a digital print of the illustrations onto acetate...
I believe my colouring book to be effective but it hasn´t reached a conclusion, I believe this works well and is a new approach within political campaigns and portray a political viewpoint in a full family friendly way.

Financial transactions.

Research:
"money is many different things at the same time.
it’s a work of art, a medium of exchange, a representation
of value, one, which most people take for granted."

"money also represents our society. it’s everywhere
but money is just an idea – an abstract measurement."

"money is paper, money is metal but in
and of itself, it is absolutely worthless. "

"the sumerians and the babylonians were among the first
to develop the practice of trading currency, however
bartering valuable goods in exchange for others has
existed even longer. the earliest example of goods
trading dates back over 100,000 years in swaziland,
where red ochre was exchanged. other currency
stand-ins included barley, precious metals like gold
and silver as well as foods and spirits."

"throughout its many evolutions, money has been
designed using the latest technologies, whether they
be metal forming techniques for coins or printing methods
for paper banknotes. designers and artists have played
a key role in giving form to currency since its inception.
currency
design is a small industry and most practitioners
are either graphic designers or highly specialized
craftspeople who are well trained in the process of
making money."

" they are mostly made with a 2:1 ratio of length to height and
measure on average 15cm long. each bill is printed
with is country of origin, value and date of issue.
depending on the design and country, the bill may also
show other information. they are commonly issued in
a number of higher value denominations, which are
differentiated by colour, shape and pattern or design.
banknotes also feature a number of security features
like hologram stickers or special colour changing inks"

What if Our Money Were Designed to Celebrate Science Instead of Presidents?
THE FUTURE IS looking brighter for mobile payments, but that doesn’t mean banknotes are nearing extinction. Far from it: As of October 1 there was $1.29 trillion worth of currency in circulation.

OUGD 505 Final Production

2 final digital prints.
Scanned screenprints and foiling designs.
Decided to use the scanned screen prints for one of the digital books and use the real screen prints for the second digital book.
The foiling i believed to look and feel better when not scanned. Both books have the same foiling design but in different colours (1. ***, 2. **** ).
The weight of the book with the original screen prints feels heavier due to the use of a thicker stock when screen printing.
Matt Olin regular high white fsc4 90gsm/mic was the stock used for the rest of the colouring book.
A5 book size.
Trimmed with the use of an electric paper cutting machine.
When the production was over, I took some pictures of the final product.
The feedback obtained was positive, the digital and original screen prints can also be used to colour in.
A black and white positive of one of the screen prints was used also with the intension of being a colouring page.
The illustration on the front cover looks smooth and bright on the stock used. The typeface, the colouring pages, logo and size of book also work and are successful achievements.

This campaign will be distributed across America in schools, community centres, hospitals, out reach programs, town halls, etc.
An online E-book will be available for anyone to have access too with the possibility of a quick download and print. As a way of marketing my personal brand, my logo was placed at the back of the book, there was a continuity with online sharing on instagram, facebook and behance. A way to connect with the public today is with the use of # and the feedback obtained online from different designers and people getting involved in 'BanGunsInAmerica' was helpful.
'Kill nothing but time' is the colouring book title, being one of the quotes used on one of the colouring pages initially.
The quote seemed perfect, represents exactly what the message behind my book is. Kill nothing but time is also a metaphor for when a person is day dreaming. I used this quote in this book to portray the message kill nothing but time not people. The illustration used for the front cover was drawn on illustrator an the intention of this was to represent the tittle in a creative, colourful, friendly way. The #BANGUNSINAMERICA is placed at the top of the front cover going across in one single line. This # is placed at the top of every colouring page in the top right corner as a repetition and keep a strong branding campaign. The title is places in two separate lines underneath the illustration, the illustration has been referred to as an "explosion of colour", "very detailed" and "looks like colouring page coloured in".

As a family colouring book, it is educational for both kids and adults, interactive for anyone who likes colouring, motivational and inspiring with the positive quotes used and unique and innovative given that its not like most boring white and black colouring books.
The colouring book is mainly targeted at children to use and interact with, although the message is mainly for adults to pay attention to, this is kind of a bonding experience for the child and parents.
The illustrations used when designing the screenprints are appropriate, following a retro hispanic style.
To portray the ideology of prison i included vertical and horizontal bars across the page to create a caged like effect.
The gun illustrations on the screenprints are less animated than the ones on the colouring pages, given that this idea of prison is portrayed in every design giving a negative message towards gun use.
The facts and figures were obtained from reliable campaigns. Facts and figures relate well with the audience, when the audience read facts and figures they instantly connect as they don´t allow room for opinions, the facts and figures are solid evidence that cannot be disputed.

Final feedback, "The images are very illustrative and effective, appropriate and child friendly, the use of the red colour makes the pages stand out to usual colouring pages. The typeface is an appropriate size for the book and easy to read, and the paper is thick which makes for a sturdier book. Good variation in stock, will create different textures when colouring it in."

Context-
Motivational, positive quotes.
Facts and figures educational.
Front cover illustration.
Back cover - Personal branding, #, other campaigns, facts and figures.
Harsh topic approached 'child friendly'.
Motivates students and adults to get involved in this problem.

  • Make your gun illustrations 'broken' in a funny cartoony way
  • Looks more like you are 'for' instead of against the use of guns
  • Too much type in poster 2 and 3
  • Too little type or doesn't stand out enough on poster 4 and 5

Colouring pages:

Feedback:
1. What print method should i use for my Ban Guns in America colouring pages?

2. Should I keep the same stock for the colouring pages and screen prints?

3. Should my colouring pages be printed in black or in red to follow/match my screen prints?

4. Is it appropriate for the kids?

5. Do you think the illustrations and quotes in the colouring pages are too random? Do they work well with the screen prints?

1. I think cheap stock, basic copier paper.
2. No colouring books need to be thinner, kids won’t appreciate the thick textured stock, It will be harder to colour in on.
3. Black let the kids add the colour
4. Yes and no the text is too much for a child simplify, less text as possible
5. yes a little some are irrelevant to gun crime such as the ‘Love yourself’ thing.
*The screen prints are really good.
I feel your target audience is aimed at children not students. Students possibly wouldn’t be interested in colouring unless the images were less childish, like maybe more realistic illustrations.

1. Basic paper then allows someone to draw on hem easy (NO GLOSS etc).
2. Colouring books are normally cheap, so high quality thick stock shouldn’t be used.
3. Black as if a kid wanted to use red it wouldn’t be helpful.
4. The colouring pages are appropriate but the screen prints aren’t very child friendly (Unless they’re not for children).
5. Some of the images and quotes aren’t relevant to gun crime, i don’t really see the colouring book working with the project as children would just colour the images and move on to the next without looking at the type. For the colouring book to work the images and quotes would have to be more shocking.

1.Print method should be something cheap to reproduce - Maybe just laser printed.
2. I think a thinner stock would be better for a colouring book.
3.Black - Red would muddle up the colours when colouring in.
4. I feel like bigger imagery and less text would be more appropriate as a colouring book for kids.
5. They are a bit random, feels like a bible entry.
Maybe focus more on the adult audience as they are the ones who vote and make the choices. Maybe aim at families as a whole?
Screen prints could be refined, less text and bolder imagery - Posters should be read in 3 seconds, screen prints in A3 too? Just some ideas!

1. I would digital print for the colouring book, but experiment with different stock and materials to see which of them works best for for colouring in.
The research is good and so are the designs but do all the images in the colouring book match with the theme of ban guns in America?
2. Stick to the black and white for the colouring book as it could be difficult to colour on red ink. Include more illustrations which show guns and the ban for the same.
Try to look into how you could link the screen prints and colouring pages together, as they look like two different things right now.

1.Colouring pages be on a thinner and cheaper stock.
2. Black - Still can see ink and is more friendly on the eye.
3.Maybe some of the text is too ‘deep’. Could be a little inappropriate for kids.
I don’t think the screen prints are appropriate for children, therefore think about who your overall audience is as the typefaces and some imagery considered i wouldn't say is appropriate.

Final Illustrations (Colouring book)
White or Red:

Final colouring pages:
Typeface - University - regular - size 35 for quote and size 20 for #BANGUNSINAMERICA and  'Colouring page'.

1. Make sure to check it is in CMYK before printing - Red colour looks different after printed. (Make sure this doesn’t happen when producing you final outcome).
2.Type face works for children book - Appropriate.
3. Maybe try ‘Colour with numbers’? - Try making 1 or 2 designs, make illustrations and place numbers where the ‘chosen’ colours should be. Fun, educational and could work with your book.
4.Do you need a red background? It works, its interesting, makes the illustrations and quotes stand out more but is this relevant within the costing of a colouring book?
5. Do you need the roses in black? Maybe it would make the illustration friendlier if they were also in white and accessible to colour in.
6. Guns and roses page, inappropriate because its not showing you are against looks ‘for’ guns, questions your book and aim.
7. Foiling + Screenprints + Colouring pages - Good mix of textures, experiments, different, friendly
8.Better illustrations, more relevant to your topic ‘Ban guns in America’. Quotes work.
9. Whats the costing of your book?
10. Target audience works better now that your book is for ‘families’.
11. Distribution?
12. Hardcover?
13. Costing?
